All the speed of a fish.
All the control of a shortboard.
LOST RNF-'96
Chris Ward and Cory Lopez rode these to change surfing in ’96. Refined over 25 years for surfers who want shortboard performance, not just fish speed.
How It Surfs
• Pulled-in tail delivers shortboard control, not typical loose fish feel
• Single to double concave with vee keeps you fast down the line with drive through turns
• Works in everything from knee-high to overhead—not just a small-wave board
• Actually rips where typical fish just go straight
Key Design Advantages
• Tail width matches high-performance shortboards for maximum control off the tail
• More curve and width 6" from tail than typical fish—lets you push hard without sliding out
• MR-inspired outline built for competitive performance, not just kneeboard fun
Tested and validated by Kolohe Andino, Coco Ho, Ian Crane, and Crosby Colapinto.
Same dims as your standard shortboard
Knee-high to overhead waves

LOST RNF '96
The Lost RNF '96 is the performance fish that changed modern surfboard design — fast, loose, and built to make average surf feel extraordinary. Matt Biolos refined his legendary 1996 shape with 25 years of board-building knowledge, and the result is the best-selling fish model in the world for good reason.
WHO
The RNF '96 is one of the most accessible high-performance fish shapes available, designed to work across a wide range of ability levels.
- Intermediate surfers ready to ride shorter and faster than a traditional shortboard
- Advanced surfers who want a dedicated small-wave weapon that doesn't sacrifice performance
- Surfers who feel limited by longer boards when conditions are weak or inconsistent
- Bigger surfers who want a fish that still turns sharply off the tail rather than plowing through it
- Experienced riders looking for a single board that holds up well past what most fish are capable of
If you want to surf better on days that most boards make feel like work, the RNF '96 was built for exactly that.
WHEN
The RNF '96 is at its best in sub-par to solid conditions — the kind of surf where a standard shortboard feels stiff and unresponsive. It generates speed through flat sections where other boards bog, and its pulled-in tail lets you drive hard into turns without the drift that wider-tailed fish tend to produce. In Hawaii, this is the board for the kind of inconsistent, rippable lineups that don't cooperate with performance shortboards. Intermediate and advanced surfers will typically size it 2–5 inches shorter than their regular shortboard to maximize responsiveness.
WHAT
The RNF '96 looks like a fish but surfs closer to a shortboard than any other fish on the market. The key difference is the tail: where most fish designs are pulled from kneeboard-inspired wide tails, Biolos drew from the high-performance twin fins of the 1970s and 80s — a narrower, more pulled-in swallow that gives the board real control off the back foot. The outline stays balanced from nose to tail, both measuring the same width at 12 inches, with added curve around 6 inches from the tail to accelerate through turns. Rocker is low entry for easy wave-catching and drive, and the bottom runs a classic single concave blending to double concave accelerating vee — a combination that creates speed down the line and pivot through the pocket.
The RNF '96 is available in multiple constructions: PU for a traditional flex and feel, and EPS-based options (Lightspeed, Lightspeed II, and Blacksheep) for a lighter, livelier ride with more float at the same dimensions. Each construction delivers the same proven shape with a different response under your feet — the right choice depends on your surfing style and the conditions you ride most.

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS
PU: Traditional polyurethane foam with polyester resin. The classic feel — a bit heavier, slightly softer flex, and the most familiar response underfoot.
Lightspeed: EPS foam core with epoxy resin and carbon-based reinforcement strips. Lighter than PU, livelier flex, and roughly 2 liters more float at the same dimensions.
Lightspeed II: The updated version of Lightspeed — EPS foam core with epoxy resin, replacing all carbon elements with S-Glass and Innegra composite. Same lightweight, lively feel as the original Lightspeed, with reduced chatter and a smoother, more forgiving flex pattern.
Blacksheep: EPS foam core with epoxy resin and carbon fiber reinforcement. Lightweight and high-response, with an emphasis on explosive pop and drive through turns.
FIN CONFIGURATIONS
Twin + 1 (2+1) setup. Designed to be ridden as a twin with a small center trailer. Can also be ridden as a pure twin or as a standard thruster. Fins not included.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the RNF '96 surfboard's design and construction?
The Lost RNF 1996 surfboard combines retro fish design elements with modern performance enhancements. It is available in LightSpeed construction and Black Sheep construction.
LightSpeed Construction: This technology enhances floatation and responsiveness with approximately 2 liters more buoyancy than traditional PU boards. It incorporates strategic carbon placement for improved flex and durability.
Black Sheep Construction: According to a comparison between the Black Sheep and LightSpeed constructions, the Black Sheep construction offers more drive through turns and feels more explosive in the lip. It also seems to be more resilient, showing fewer pressure dents. The RNF 96 is a versatile groveler that performs beyond expectations, functioning as an all-around, rip-able fun machine for a wide range of surfers
How does the RNF '96 perform in different wave conditions?
The RNF 1996 excels in both small and larger wave conditions.
It offers excellent paddle power and easy wave entry, making it responsive in mushy surf. In bigger waves, it maintains control at speed, demonstrating its versatility across different surfing environments.
Surfers have reported that it handles everything from knee-high waves to overhead conditions effectively.
What fin setups are recommended for the RNF '96?
For optimal performance, two fin setups are recommended:
- Mark Richards 2+1 Setup: This configuration includes twin fins for speed and flow, with an optional trailer fin for added control, making it ideal for smaller waves.
- Power Twins Configuration: This setup features a larger base for increased drive and holding power through turns, suitable for more aggressive surfing.
Is the RNF '96 suitable for beginners?
Yes, the RNF '96 is considered suitable for beginners as well as intermediate surfers transitioning to performance boards.
Its forgiving design allows new surfers to develop their skills without sacrificing performance, making it a great choice for those just starting out
How durable is the RNF '96 surfboard?
The Lightspeed construction of the RNF 96 is designed for durability
With proper care, surfers have reported minimal pressure dings even after a year of regular use, even among surfers weighing over 200 pounds. This makes it reliable option for frequent surfers.
The Black Sheep construction is also remarkably durable, outperforming many other high performance constructions in terms of resilience to pressure dings. The use of Triax - NCF Carbon fiber, combined with multiple layers of fiberglass, enhances overall strength and longevity.
According to one surfer, even after two years of frequent use, the deck construction holds up remarkably well, maintaining its flex and spring.
