Based off 2025 World Champion Yago Dora’s Lowers-winning 6’0 Round Pin surfboard.

In celebration of Yago’s freshly minted World Title, we are “early releasing” his Round Pin tail version of the all-new FORMULA-1, for Fall ’25. The Formula-1 was originally an older model, made popular by Julian Wilson 15 years ago. We completely updated it and recently brought it back to life, testing under the feet of Cole Houshmand and 2025 World Champ Yago Dora, among others.

It all started with a team day down at Lowers, filming all the boys riding a collection of vintage team rider boards pulled from the attic, for our still-unreleased “USED” edit. Among the collection (ranging from the ’80s–2010s), a pair of Julian Wilson’s F1 boards from 2010 and 2011 were hits, inspiring me to… “Look back, in order to see forward.”

We searched out the original “AKU” file from Julian’s magic Lowers “Clown” board and overlapped it on top of a current Driver 3.0 team board, incorporating many of the original’s design aspects and curves, melding the two together, to create something completely new.

At first, we developed a squash tail version, similar to the old Julian board and got it under the feet of Cole Houshmand and other local team riders, with electric responses. Cole rode his first one to great success in multiple WSL events—El Salvador, Lowers, and finally winning the WCT event in Brazil.

Feeling onto something, we made a handful of Round Pin tails leading up to the Lowers CT event.

We gave one of the first F-1 Round Pin versions to Yago mid-event, just a couple of nights before Finals Day at Lowers. He tried it that night and was so impressed, he switched to a brand-new board, riding it in the Semi-Finals and Final—winning our home event on this design. A prototype test F-1 Round Pin.

The overall feeling is a combination of instant speed, lively lift and very fast, driving turns that initiate from the front foot, with a precise, sharp finish under the back foot.

The stock/standard files for the Fall ’25 early release are all based off (and scaled from) Yago’s Lowers-winning board 6’0 x 19” x 2.50” at 29.75 liters.

In Spring ’26, we will be releasing the Squash Tail, based exactly off (and scaled from) Cole’s magic Brazil WCT-winning board

In relation to the Driver 3.0...

  • In general, the new F1 is more “set back,” in both outline and rail-line rocker, than the Driver 3.0.
  • The nose is a bit narrower at 12” and 24”, with the wide point a bit further back and more hip in the outline. It’s got more outline and rail-line curve between the feet through the tail, which is wider 12” up (under the rear foot) with more curve and pulled in from there.
  • A more defined “pin” in the last few inches than the Driver 3.0’s “round” tail, for added bite and connectivity.
  • The F-1 features a fairly thick centerline, with a “vee” deck tapering to rails that are a bit more full and forgiving.
  • A bit more nose rocker ahead of the front foot and a touch less tail rocker, but with more concave between the feet and through the tail.
  • Noticeably deeper single concave, with purposeful double concave all the way through the rear fin, lending speed and lift.
  • The deep concave creates a more pronounced rail-line curve under the rear foot and through the fins, for precise, tight-radius turns.
  • The tail block is thinner with boxy rails for grip and hold

Technology Behind the Magic

The Lost Formula-1 represents Matt Biolos' modern evolution of Julian Wilson's F1 model from 2010-2011—the board Julian used to dominate the world tour. This updated version blends the proven F1 template with modern Driver 3.0 elements, resulting in the latest high-performance round pin from Lost.

Design Innovation:

Round pin shortboards have been a staple of every power surfer's quiver for more than 40 years. Ever since Simon Anderson unveiled his thruster design at pumping Bells Beach in 1981, this tail shape has been the go-to for powerful carves and control in hollow or larger waves—exactly the type of surfing used in Hawaii.

The Formula-1 is set back more than the Driver 3.0 in both outline and rail-line rocker, with a narrower nose at 12" and 24" and the wide point positioned further back with more hip in the outline. This progressive outline is blended with a noticeably deeper single to double concave bottom contour that runs all the way through the rear fin, generating more speed and lift.

The concave setup works with the round pin tail to create a more pronounced rail-line curve under the rear foot and through the fins, delivering extra bite through all types of turns and enabling precise, tight-radius turns. The fairly thick centerline with vee deck tapers to rails that are slightly more full and forgiving than the Driver 3.0, while the thin tail block features boxy rails for improved grip and hold in critical sections.

Added nose rocker ahead of the front foot helps with late drops in steep waves, while slightly reduced tail rocker maintains speed. The result is instant speed, lively lift, and very fast driving turns that initiate from the front foot with a precise, sharp finish under the back foot.

Performance Characteristics:

The progressive outline blended with the deep single to double concave bottom contour generates added drive and speed throughout the entire bottom. The concave setup works with the round pin tail to create a pronounced rail-line curve under the rear foot, delivering extra bite through all types of turns—from carves to bottom turns to tight-radius pocket turns.

The thick centerline with vee deck provides extra volume while tapered rails deliver control and maneuverability. Added nose rocker helps with late drops in steep waves, while reduced tail rocker maintains speed through sections. The thin tail block with boxy rails provides extra grip and hold in critical conditions.

This board provides control and flow for aggressive riders who are pushing their boards to the limit in powerful waves. It's designed to clean up your style and bring you back to the fundamentals—and then build on them with another level of progression.

LOST PU CONSTRUCTION

What Is a PU Surfboard?

Classic Feel. Trusted Build. Time-Tested Performance.

A PU surfboard, short for polyurethane, refers to a surfboard shaped from a polyurethane foam core and laminated with fiberglass cloth using polyester resin. This construction has been the gold standard for decades and remains a favorite among surfers who value that classic board feel. Lost Surfboards and many other leading shapers still use PU for its balanced performance, durability, and smooth flex pattern—especially in everyday conditions and bigger, choppier waves.

Even with the rise of lighter epoxy builds, PU remains a solid go-to for those who want predictable, powerful performance underfoot. Whether you're carving up solid reef breaks or chasing the feel of your first board, PU construction delivers.

Key Characteristics of PU Surfboards

  • PU foam combined with fiberglass and polyester resin creates a forgiving flex pattern. This provides a smoother rail-to-rail transition that feels “buttery” and comfortable—especially appreciated in more critical or textured wave conditions.
  • PU boards tend to be heavier than EPS/Epoxy models, which many surfers appreciate for added drive and momentum down the line. This weight also helps the board handle well in windy or choppy surf.
  • Dings? No big deal. PU/poly boards are easy to repair at home or by any surf shop, with widely available materials and lower costs compared to epoxy builds.
  • Most traditional shortboards and performance boards—including many from Lost, Channel Islands, and Pyzel—were originally designed around PU blanks. That legacy continues with refined shapes and reliable performance today.

When Should You Choose a PU Surfboard?

A PU board is often the best option if:

  • classic surf feel with smooth drive and power.
  • overhead surf, reef breaks, or textured ocean conditions.
  • a bit of extra weight underfoot for better control on the face.

PU constructions are ideal for surfers who prioritize control and consistency over lightweight responsiveness. From seasoned shortboarders to everyday surfers riding waves across Hawaii, PU boards continue to be a trusted option for a reason.

Why We Still Love PU

At Hawaiian South Shore, we believe there’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to boards—but PU surfboards hold a unique place in surf culture. They’re the go-to choice for reliable performance, time-tested in waves around the world, and especially dialed for Hawaii’s variable conditions.

LOST F1 FAQS

What makes the Lost F1 different from other round pin shortboards?

The Lost Formula 1 combines Julian Wilson's proven F1 template from the early 2010s with modern Driver 3.0 elements. It features a deep single to double concave, progressive outline, added nose rocker, and reduced tail rocker for enhanced drive and control in powerful waves.

What size Lost Formula 1 should I ride?

Yago Dora's championship dimensions are 6'0" x 19" x 2.5" at 29.75 liters. For Hawaii's powerful waves, most intermediate to advanced surfers should size 2-4 inches shorter than their height. Visit Hawaiian South Shore for personalized sizing based on your weight, skill level, and local wave conditions.

Is the Lost F1 good for Hawaii surf conditions?

Yes, the Lost Formula 1 excels in Hawaii's hollow and powerful waves. The round pin tail provides control in steep faces, while the progressive outline and concave setup deliver drive and speed needed for waves like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Rocky Point. It's designed specifically for the type of surfing we experience in Hawaii.

What construction should I choose for the Lost Formula 1?

The Lost F1 is available in multiple constructions at Hawaiian South Shore: traditional PU for classic flex and feel, Lightspeed for lighter weight and enhanced responsiveness, and Black Sheep carbon for maximum durability and performance. Your choice depends on your surfing style and wave conditions.

Who should ride the Lost Formula 1?

The Lost Formula 1 is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers who want a high-performance round pin for powerful waves. If you're comfortable surfing overhead waves and want control in hollow or larger surf, this board will elevate your progressive surfing style.
